HUNDREDS of drivers caught in a speed trap on a dual-carriageway in Moselle, France could reclaim fines and licence points after a lawyer spotted the 90kph limit was illegal.
Although there are signs for a 90kph limit on the RN52 no decree enforcing it was ever passed at the prefecture - so the normal 110kph speed limit stays in force.

GOSAFE SPEED-CAMERA SYSTEM AN ‘ABJECT FAILURE’ – JUDGE DEVINS

Judge Mary Devins has again heavily criticised the Government’s decision to give the GoSafe company responsibility for operating speed cameras and prosecuting offenders.
Judge Devins previously criticised the GoSafe system in court last December, saying that while the idea might have ‘sounded great’ in Dáil Eireann, it was clearly not effective in court. On Thursday, during a sitting of Westport District Court, Judge Devins hit out at the system again.
After listening to one case, which she later dismissed, Judge Devins referred to the GoSafe speeding campaign as an ‘abject failure’.

Many speed cameras have not cut accident rates and may even have increased them, figures reveal for the first time today.
Statistics published by the UK Department for Transport show many cameras have done little or nothing to improve accident rates, but have proved highly effective in clocking up speeding fines.

TWO out of three people allegedly caught speeding by the new GoSafe vans have had their cases struck out in court after claiming they never received the motoring fine.
Some 24 motorists who appeared in Limerick District Court escaped prosecution after telling Judge Eamon O'Brien they had never received notification that they had been caught speeding.

The results of an AA survey on speed cameras show a majority of Irish motorists believe the primary aim is to raise revenue. 55% of respondents in the latest AA Motor Insurance Poll said they believe speed cameras are mostly about raising money. The survey results also highlighted a big issue of trust between the motorists and the authorities with 47% saying they don't trust the authorities to place speed cameras only in appropriate locations

UK: LOCATIONS OF MONEY-SPINNING SPEED CAMERAS TO BE REVEALED

MONEY-spinning speed cameras that rake in fines but don’t cut accidents are to be named and shamed.
The Government will tomorrow order police and councils to reveal the previously secret statistics – such as how much each unit makes.
Local authorities will have to publish the numbers of accidents and casualties at sites – both before and after speed traps were installed.
Police will have to reveal the number of prosecutions arising from each camera and say if offenders are fined, taken to court or sent on a “speed awareness course”.

We didn't need to be told this but the Gardaí have admitted in this Sunday Tribune article that they concentrate their speed checks on the busier roads and neglect the most dangerous roads. According to the article senior gardaí admitted that the figures were skewed and that enforcement did tend to be concentrated on the busiest roads.

2009 looks set to be the year with the lowest road fatalities since records began 50 years ago according to an article in today's Irish Times. Desite this, and evidence from the UK that speed cameras have any positive impact on road safety, Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey is determined to push ahead with a network of 45 new speed cameras operated by a private company in 2010.

SPEED CAMERA BOSS BANNED FOR DRIVING OVER 160KMH

The chief executive of Serco, which oversees more than 5,000 cameras on Britain's roads has been banned for driving at over 100mph (160kmh). Tom Riall, 49, was apprehended by police officers when they recorded him driving at 102.92mph on the A14 near Newmarket, in Suffolk. Mr Riall is head of Serco’s home affairs division, which has installed and managed speed cameras at more than 4,000 sites around Britain since 1992.

According to RTÉ News, the Department of Justice said today's Cabinet meeting had confirmed the Government will be proceeding with the safety camera network which will be operated by a private operator.
